The Guyana Berbice Association is a non-profit, not-political, non-sectarian organization whose mission is to promote the cultural spirit of Guyanese and to provide assistance to less fortunate individuals and needy causes. The organization was founded in 1984 and boast of chapters in Toronto, New York, London, and Guyana.
The stated objects of the organization are:
to keep alive the spirit of Berbicians and Guyanese living in the Diaspora;
to maintain links with other chapters and Guyanese cultural and charitable organizations;
to provide assistance to individuals, groups, and charitable organizations with like missions.
Membership is open to any individual who are prepared to work towards the goals and objects of GBA, and are willing to serve in leadership positions and to volunteer their services when needed. There is an annual membership fee of $25 per family, $15 per individual, and $5 for youth.
The organizations focuses on the provision of services in a number of areas, including but not limited to:
medical assistance to hospitals and other medical facilities in Guyana;
ambulatory services in New Amsterdam;
providing clothing, shoes, and food to needy children and families in Guyana;
school equipment and supplies to New Amsterdam Congregation School (Mission Chapel School) in New Amsterdam;
financial assistance to needy disaster causes in Guyana;
Provision for the administration and upkeep of residents at the Alpha Home for Children (an orphanage).
GBA raises funds through a number of sources, principally from membership dues, its annual Easter Dinner and Dance, its summer food fairs, and from contributions from individuals and organizations. Financial resources are allocated based on the number of projects earmarked for support in any given year.
